When we accepted Mister from the Chilliwack Care center we didn't know if she was male or female. There were no eggs so we thought probably male. We also thought the wing issue was a soft tissue injury and that it would heal. Pigeons generally fall under our "special needs" category as they are not protected under the BC Wildlife Act. Mister beat the odds, first by being rescued by the Care Center, then by the transfer to SAINTS. Mister has just as much value to us as anyone else. In the last few months we've learned a few things! First, Mister is a Miss, go figure! She's also had some kind of trauma, probably to her brain. Her entire right side is affected. She's lost her right eye. Her right wing can stretch out but cannot flap and hold her up. She cannot hold it close to her body or control it particularly well. Her right leg and foot are usable, but awkwardly.
Mister cannot fly. She can walk ok, but sometimes she trips on her own wing. In time we may need to fabricate a way to keep the wing up out of the way, but she's not there yet. Mister has been accepted as part of the flock. She is happy and safe to live her life how she wants. We have a number of ramps so she can still get up to the windowsill and walk outside and back in when she wants to. She's got her own nest on the lower level. She eats, drinks, broods on her plastic egg, and interacts with everyone.
Mister is one special bird 💕
