My Story

Meet Fluffy!

We accepted her a number of weeks ago but had to push off the intake until Mister finished quarantine and moved into the aviary. This little chicken could have been born with nutritional deficencies, or she may have had some kind of injury happen and has one leg rotated 180°. Can we fix this? Unfortunately no. Her right leg is fused fully backwards. Is there some kind of non surgical repair that may help? Again, no. Can we offer her an acceptable quality of life? We just don't have the answers yet. This is a friendly, sweet bird who loves to be snuggled. We asked our vet to name her today after we had to rush her in as a medical emergency. Fluffy got her "good" leg stuck underneath her body and with her own toenail ripped her neck and chest open. Another fraction of measurement and she wouldn't be here now. We still don't know if we can offer this baby any acceptable quality of life. We honestly thought we were going to be euthanizing. But, we couldn't justify it. As we were discussing our options she said, the wound is clean, it's a simple suture procedure and she should heal well. So if the new injury was not considered, euthanasia would not be on the table (yet). We'd only had her for a day! We elected to proceed and stitch her up. So we are back to whether or not we can give this girl a life worth living.

She's not "just" a chicken.

Fluffy is now a Saint and she deserves every bit of consideration and effort as anyone else. She is also just 4 months old.

We are going to try.
