Rupert came to SAINTS in 2017 as a temporary visitor when his family home had to be evacuated during the devastating wildfire season in BC that summer. Alongside his barn buddies from the interior, Rupert planned to stay at SAINTS until it was safe to return home.
During his stay, Rupert quickly bonded with our resident donkey, Ziggy. Their friendship grew strong, and by the time it was safe for Rupert to go back North, separating him from Ziggy would have been heartbreaking for both. Recognizing their bond, SAINTS generously offered Rupert a permanent home.
Affectionately nicknamed "Eeyore" for his personality traits, Rupert has faced several medical challenges, including weight loss, laminitis, and gastric impaction in 2023/2024. It was touch-and-go for a while, but with dedicated care, Rupert has since recovered. He now follows a strict diet plan to maintain his health.
Rupert is a true character, and now has a more upbeat demeanor and increased activity since gaining weight and improving his mobility. He's a beloved member of our sanctuary, and we cherish him dearly.
