Rescue Journal

to the very distressed woman

Carol  ·  May 16, 2007

who just screamed and hung up on me after telling me i should take saints off the internet and get out of rescue since i obviously am lying and not helping animals at all. i am not those bad names that you called me, i am really a kind and nice and hardworking person. i just happen to be too full of homeless animals to squeeze in another very large dog. i wanted to tell you that i do care, and i am worried about what you said was your next plan of action, which really is not a good idea. but you hung up and now i can't. sigh, i guess people only think i am nice if i will take them all. but i think that would make me a terrible rescuer and an even worse person. but then that is just my perspective which is much different than her own..

this sucks.

That really was worth saying twice Janice : - ) .. I can't believe what I have seen & learned since I've started volunteering at SAINTS..... I sometimes wonder if perhaps, ignorance is bliss... I hope the dog ends up O.K.. & Carol, like Deb says.. go hug any one of the many that are already linning up & waiting for a piece of you : - )

The biggest problem is that she is only one of a bazillion who don't know the picture we face as rescuers by the hour. A bazillion don't know the deep pain we feel when we have to say no in order to protect the ones we have already taken in. A bazillion don't know we are not rich and work at full time jobs and off hours we try to find ways to stretch our dollar . And try as we will to find good people to help bring in more money so we can do more and with luck we might have a little extra so we can take in one more. A bazillion people think we are rich when the only thing that is huge is heart, will and hope. A bazillion poeple don't know we must find time to love those that are in our care as well. It is not jsut about stuffing as many we can udner a roof tada.. with that comes a bazillion problems and it would be the same bazillion cursing us for that too. Time isnt' unlimited either is the money.
So yes we know there are a bazillion more out there who need us but we are few but we are the ones making a stand and doing soemthing about it. If soem of these poeple would just make one selfless act and try harder isntead of leaving up to us who sacrfice everything. But a bazillion don't know we do that either. Excuse my rant .. they don't get it ..they havent' gone around enough times.

What is it with people who think it is okay to behave abhorrently just because they have screwed up, neglected a problem, pretended nothing was wrong or just want their responsibilities to be handled by someone else, like yesterday? This woman had no right to take her frustration out on you, and I'm sorry you were the recipient of her verbal abuse. You can't save them all, Carol. You also can't educate every idiot who wants to dump her dog and walk away guilt-free. The animals that are lucky enough to land at SAINTS are a small, small percentage of those who are in need, as we all know. The horrible, misguided woman on the other end of the line is part of the problem. You are part of the solution. Sadly, the chasm between you and people like her will not likely be bridged anytime soon.
Go hug Tom, or Maudie, or Lexi, or Chicklet, or Jack, or Buddy, or Sissy, or Bonnie, or Copper, or Bill, or Dexter, or any of the animals you have been able to save from irresponsible or uncaring or lazy or thoughtless people. You can't do it alone, Carol, there are simply too many animals, but you do what you can, and that's not about perspective, that's just a fact.
